With less than 7 days to the long awaited event; the 2nd edition of the Elgon Half Marathon is almost here.
United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation (JOCDEF) and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) have engaged communities in their pre-marathon activities like tree planting along river banks and in schools within Kapchorwa, Sironko and Mbale districts in Sebei and Bugisu region respectively geared towards restoring nature.
The schools covered so far include Kapchesombe P/S in East division, Kapchorwa Municipality, Gamatui Girls’ SS and Kaserem SS in Tingey county, Kapchorwa district and Bukiise P/S and Buhugu SS both in Sironko district. The trees planted include fruit trees, compound trees, feed trees and bamboo along Kaptokwoi river bank.
Abraham Kiplimo, the CEO JOCDEF says the activity is aimed at restoring nature especially along river banks that have been encroached. He appreciated Uganda Airlines and National Forestry Association for donating 3,000 tree seedlings towards the tree planting initiative and education program to safeguard biodiversity in the Elgon region.
He added that the event is intended to amplify the need for climate action and conservation in the biodiverse Elgon region, broaden inclusive and meaningful community participation in biodiversity as well as advocating for the elimination of gender-based violence (GBV).
