Uganda’s medal prospects at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games are at high as the Men’s 10,000m final approaches, marking the pinnacle of the second day of athletics competition.
The event will feature two-time world champion Joshua Cheptegei, who is determined to secure his first Olympic title in this distance. As the world record holder, Cheptegei has consistently emphasized his primary goal for the season is winning this race.
“My tactical approach was not at its best in my first race, but I am fully prepared for Paris. My focus is on the 10k, as I am yet to secure an Olympic title in this event,” Cheptegei remarked in May, ahead of the Oslo Diamond League meet.
Having claimed a silver medal in Tokyo 2020, Cheptegei aims to unseat defending champion Selemon Barega. Barega, along with fellow Ethiopians Yomif Kejelcha and Berihu Aregawi, forms a formidable lineup.
Accompanying Cheptegei is Jacob Kiplimo, a bronze medalist from the last Olympics, who is also a strong contender for the title. Uganda’s third representative in the event, Martin Magengo Kiprotich, is expected to play a crucial role in setting the pace.
Other notable competitors include Kenyans Daniel Mateiko, Nicholas Kipkorir, and Bernard Kibet, as well as Canada’s Mohammad Ahmed and Grant Fischer from the United States. These athletes are anticipated to deliver a highly competitive race on the iconic purple track.
The Men’s 10,000m Final will take place Today (Friday, August 2, at 10:20 pm EAT.)
