Kapchorwa Municipal town clerk, Tonny Ogwang has responded to a directive from the Chief Administrative Officer Kapchorwa, Charles Kumakech Oluba saying they are actively looking for alternative land for solid waste disposal in the municipality.
This follows a directive from the CAO stopping the Municipal Council from dumping more garbage and waste in the lagoon and the neighboring land of the hospital.
In a letter dated August 22, 2024, Kumakech said the purpose of the lagoon has been rendered useless specifically for the hospital liquid waste which if not properly managed can lead to many health hazards like cholera, dysentery, smell nuisance, among others.
He said “the liquid waste is flowing into the nearby stream and communities in the neighborhood use this stream water for various purposes” raising serious health complications.
Other issues arising but not limited to includes the smell from the silted lagoon that is a nuisance to the hospital patients and the neighboring communities.
However, in a courtesy call to the municipal town clerk, Ogwang acknowledged the claims saying they are “aware of the complains and the health hazards” and that he received the issue notice citing the hospital’s plan to renovate the lagoon.
He revealed that he had a prior meeting with the CAO about the same and plans to meet him again to forge a way forward highlighting that they are still looking for alternative land for dumping and had earlier on asked for a grace period till December 2024.
Good human story that needs a day-2 follow up.
