The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation (JOCDEF) have today unveiled the UNDP Elgon Half Marathon for climate action, biodiversity conservation, and eliminating gender-based violence and all forms of violence against women and girls.
UNDP Elgon Half Marathon with Joshua Cheptegei will take place in Mbale City on Saturday November 2, 2024 and feature 5km, 10km and 21km running events traversing the foothills of the breathtaking Mount Elgon National Park.
According to the UNDP Country representative to Uganda Ms Nwanne-Ywede Obahor several Government entities and private sector companies are taking part in the event. She says that proceeds from the event will directly go to Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation (JOCDEF) to support the foundation’s important work in community transformation.
On her part, Kween district Woman MP Emma Rose Cherukut appreciated Cheptegei’s global impact, saying that he has made Sebei, Uganda and Africa proud while commending his efforts in addressing gender based violence even as the run is been launched for this same cause.
Youth Affairs Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi who represented the State Minister for Sports, Hon Peter Ogwang at the event pledged his support for the event and revealed he had requested the IGP to promote Cheptegei to Superintendent of Police, in recognition of his Olympic achievements.
