The UPDF engineering brigade has started working on a crucial 5.2km road project connecting the Teryet High Altitude Training Center facility to Kween district. The road, backed by government funding and managed by the UPDF through the Ministry of Education, is aimed at enhancing market access to local farmers.
Starting from where the tarmac ends at Teryet, the road will stretch all the way to Kween, where it will link up with the recently constructed road to Kwoti. Engineer Yusuf Kaya of the UPDF engineering brigade detailed the project activities include shaping, widening, compacting, and adding murram.
However, he said that although the original timeline was one to two months, the whole process may stretch up to three months due to challenges like steep inclines and the rainy weather that will potentially extend the completion period to three months.
The road’s poor condition, particularly during the rainy season, has restricted the farmers ability to reach markets efficiently. It is important to note that the primary mode of transportation has been costly donkeys, each carrying a sack of Irish potatoes at sh10,000 and above.
This upgrade upon completion means that farmers and traders alike will benefit, ultimately fostering economic development within the region.
